[Abstract]: The Scarlet Letter was Nathaniel Hawthorne's masterpiece. His work remained notable for their treatment of the guilt and the moral choices. There are a lot of symbolism in the book. One of the most complex symbolism is Pearl. This thesis mainly talked about character of Pearl analysis from her own independent individual to her effect as a carrier of Hester and the author.

Nathaniel Hawthorne has been considered to be first great American writer of fiction to work in the moralistic tradition. His special theme made him as a novelist and a momentous position in the history of American literature. The Scarlet Letter was his masterpiece. It was an elaboration of a fact which the author took out of life of the Puritan Past and the moral growth of the woman when sinned against. Among all of characters, Pearl was the most mysterious and had some original features in her character.

Seen from the story, the character---Pearl is impossible in reality. But she , a demon , has a very important role in the Scarlet Letter. She was an amazing child and perhaps one of the only many sided characters in the novel. She not only symbolized the sin, the salvation but also the reflection of her mother and the author's opinions. Anyway, Pearl was the purest and deepest symbol in the Scarlet Letter.
