KEY WORDS :Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre Shirley Villette

Charlotte Bronte was one of the daughters of a poor country clergyman at Haworth, Yorkshire, in northern England. She and her four sisters were sent to a charity school where they were cruelly treated, and two of her sisters died there. In 1835-1838 she worked as a school teacher, and later as governess. In 1842 she went with her sister Emily to study languages at a school in Brussels, where during 1843 she was employed as a teacher. In the next year she was back at Haworth, and in 1846 appeared a volume of verse entitled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, the pseudonyms of Charlotte, Emily, and Anna respectively. The Professor, Charlotte's first novel, was rejected by different publishers, and it was not published till after her death. She went on to write another novel, Jane Eyre, which was published in 1847 and achieved immediate success.

In her three principal novels, "Jane Eyre", "Shirley" and "Villette", Charlotte Bronte shows herself a critical realist who attacks the greed, petty tyranny and lack of culture among the upper classes and sympathizes with sufferings of the workers and of poor people in general. The chief distinctive feature of her novels is the creation of courageous, upright figures, such as the titular heroines in "Jane Eyre" and "Villette" and Farren in "Shirley", who successfully re-sist opperssion and other social evils in the inhuman world. Charlotte Bronte considers herself a follower of Thackeray, so she dedicates "Jane Eyre" to him and in the preface to that novel speaks of her indebtedness. On the other hand, she is under the influence of Dickens also, in the melodramatic effects in her stories and in the deeply moving scenes where she shows her sincere feelings for the victims of the unjust society.
