[Abstract]Hawthorne, the most important American romantic novelist of the nineteenth century, is greatly interested in the "interior of the heart ''of human beings .In Hawthorne's works ,he explores the result of sin ,the effect on human conscience of guilt .Hawthorne is an author who discusses the moral or ethical problems in artistic way. In almost every book he wrote, Hawthorne discusses sin and evil .All the moral principles that guides him to write are Calvinistic belief in sin and guilt.

Hawthorne is considered to be the first great American writer of fiction to work in the moralistic tradition .According to Hawthorne," There's evil in every human heart.''Hawthorne pays great attention to the human soul .In most of his works ,Hawthorne ponders over pride ,selfishness and secret guilt of human beings .His sensibility on evil is typical of the Calvinistic belief that human beings are basically depraved and corrupted ,they should obey God to atone for their sins .In many of Hawthorne's stories and novels ,the Puritan concept of life is condemned ,or the Puritan past is shown in an almost totally negative light ,but he believes that "the wrong doing of one generation lives into the successive ones .''Which are the Puritan opinions .Hawthorne's moral principles are quite systematic, which appear in his entire works .To sum up, there are three main aspects.
I. Human beings are guilty
II. The social evil
III. The inherent quality of human beings
