【Abstract:】 Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the greatest writers in American literary history. He is famous for his romantic allegory. The issue of god and evil is one of the most important themes in his works. Hawthorne thought that evil was the nature of all human beings, and the innate depravity was the basic root of all the evils of the society. So he wrote more about the individual guilt than about that of the society. In this essay, the author tries to take Young Goodman Brown and Scarlet letter for example to show Hawthorne's View of Evil.

【Key words:】evil sequence of a sin nature of human beings.

The story o f Young Goodman Brown tells us that Brown leaves his newly married wife Faith in that evening, to undertake an undefined journey that must be done between "now and the sunrise". He sets out into the forest, bends on his evil purpose, but promising himself that after this one night, he will cling to Faith's skirts and follow her to heaven.

Conclusion:
The great American writer of fiction, Nathaniel Hawthorne, showed a great interest in the problem of guilt, and his major novels generally dealt with sensational material, like poisoning murder, adultery and crime. He lived in an age when dynamic influence of Puritanism was gone and the impact of romanticism and Transcendentalism was largely felt among the intellectuals and thus he made his efforts: to explore the roots of all kinds of social evils. The view of that Evil is nature of human being is showed obviously in the fiction "Young Goodman Brown" and "Scarlet Letter ". Knowing this will do good to understand Nathaniel Hawthorn's fictions better. It's necessary to know the writer's background and inside view before understand the fictions.
