本论文集中探讨小说《老人与海》中圣地亚哥的英雄主义。在众多的评论解释中,本文着重强调主角圣地亚哥在无休止和不可想象的困境下那种不屈服的乐观主义精神,而这种精神应该被人们所接受与敬仰。为了说明这一观点,本文分为四个主要部分。第一部分介绍了《老人与海》的创作背景。这部分阐述了作者海明威的生平、海明威的文学生涯,当时的美国社会背景,当时的文学流派和社会意识形态以及这部小说对社会的影响。在第二部分,本文描述了当时圣地亚哥的生活状况,他对生活的态度以及他是如何在海上进行顽强拼搏。第三部分通过对圣地亚哥感情和想法的描写来揭示了海明威的内心世界,坚韧,自尊,乐观,自信从而衬托了本文的论点——人们可能会遭遇失败,但在精神上却永远不要放弃对胜利的渴望。 The Heroism of Santiago’s Manhood Contents Abstract The Heroism of Santiago’s Manhood This research paper concentrates on the heroism of Santiago’s manhood in the “The Old Man and The Sea”. Among the various explanations to this center of interests, the paper takes up the view that the protagonist Santiago’s optimism and unyielding character after unending and inconceivable sufferings should be really appreciated and respected. To support this thesis, the paper is developed into four major parts. (1)The first part focuses on the background of the “The Old Man and The Sea”. In this part the point that would be discussed is the author Ernest Hemingway’s resume. So are his literary career, the American society of that time, the literary trends and ideology of that time and the social significance of the novel. (2)The second part presents the endurance of Santiago through the fact that he faced hard life condition, his attitude towards life and his fighting on the sea. (3)The third part pictures Hemingway’s inner world through the description of Santiago’s feelings and thought, his unwillingness to give up, his self respect, optimism and his confidence with his energy to demonstrate the point of the paper—man can be defeated but such defeat can be turned into spiritual victory.
