Chapter one Task Description
1.2 Features of the Interpreting Task
•Interpreting TypeThe interpreting task was consecutive interpreting. The museum guide is aprofessional speaker with great pronunciation and a faster speed of delivery. At thesame time, the author exchanged ideas and provided additional useful information tosome of the questions asked by the client. Moreover, the author also did some sightinterpreting of the historical stories and liquor’s introduction on the display boards.
•Language Style
The task has two major characteristics:accuracy and diversity. The client was aforeign student, and she knew little about Chinese history while she was very familiarwith western liquor culture. The main content of this task was the presentations aboutChinese Baijiu in Jilin Provincial Wine Culture Museum. For one thing, thisinterpreting must be accurate in language, especially in functions, degrees, features, and so on.What’s more, for the author, great importance should be attached toaccuracy. For another, although this task was carried out under a relatively pleasantatmosphere, the author encountered many difficult expressions such as terms, poems, figures of speech, idioms and culture-loaded words. Therefore,in order to spread theprofound culture of Chinese Baijiu, the author adopted different interpreting strategiesand completed the interpreting task.
Chapter Three Theoretical Framework
3.1 Introduction to Skopos Theory
Skopos theory is the leading theory of contemporary functional theory put forwardby Karl Buhler,Nord and Katharina Reiss,a German psychologist and functionallinguist.Skopos usually refers to the purpose of the target text.Interpreting is not onlya kind of cross-cultural communication, but also a translation activity with a clearpurpose. The purpose decides the strategies used in the process of translation.Skopostheory holds that every act has its own purpose, and the interpreter should choose theappropriate way to achieve the desired effect under the guidance of the purpose ofinterpreting, and comprehensively consider various relevant factors to choose themost appropriate way under the actual interpreting conditions.
Skopos theory develops the theory of equivalence, which enables translators touse proper translation strategies more flexibly between the source language and thetarget language,in order to achieve the smooth communication. As the core theory ofGerman functional theory, skopos theory has three basic rules:skopos rule, coherencerule and fidelity rule.
Chapter Four Case Analysis
4.1 Difficulties Encountered in the Task
This interpreting task was carried out at Jilin Provincial Wine Culture Museum, which is labeled as a film presenting the history and culture of Chinese Baijiu. In thistask, the author had to cope with a multitude of expressions covering a wide range ofChinese Baijiu, such as its types, functions, and the shape of bottle. This part willexemplify three main difficulties,namely,culture-loaded words,four-characterphrases and rhetorical devices.
4.1.1 Culture-loaded Words
Culture-loaded words refer to words and phrases accumulated gradually in thelong history of a specific culture. These words carry rich cultural connotation.Because of this characteristic, they are often a barrier to intercultural communicationand translation.Chinese culture-loaded words marked particular items in Chineseculture.Culture-loaded words mean that there is no correspondence to the culturalinformation which is between the source language and the target language.
4.2 Coping Strategies
Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the author has summarized severaltranslation methods, such as amplification, omission, and paraphrase,so as toeffectively deal with the above problems to make the interpreting more accurate, andcoherent and in line with the requirements of the escort interpreting.
4.2.1 Amplification and Paraphrase for Culture-loaded Words
Amplification refers to the addition of certain words, sentences or paragraphs inthe target language in line with the requirements of syntax, semantics or rhetoricaldevices to achieve specific translation purposes. In the process of interpreting, supplementary interpreting can be used in some cases according to the different waysof thinking, linguistic communication habit in English and Chinese. On the basis ofthe author’s understanding of the text, the necessary words, phrases and sentences areadded to make the target language express the meaning of the source text moreaccurately and be consistent with the source language in terms of cultural background. For most culture-loaded words,it isn’t easy for the author to find standard Englishequivalents. Therefore,as the client does not have a deep understanding of Chinesehistory and culture, these words should be explained in detail in order to help herbetter understand them.
Conclusion
Through the analysis and reflection of the transcript, the author realized that thisexperience had brought her a lot of benefits. On the one hand, the author realizes theimportance of applying interpreting theory to practice and the use of differentinterpreting skills according to the different features of the source language. On theother hand, the author is also aware of the limitations and makes a reflection aftercompleting the interpreting task.
In this task,in order to achieve the communicative goal, the author adopts Skopostheory as the leading theory to tackle the three major difficulties encountered in theprocess, containing culture-loaded words,four-character phrases and rhetoricaldevices.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory, the author adopts three interpretingtechniques, namely, amplification, omission and paraphrase to deal with theinterpreting difficulties.
The above methods are helpful in solving problems, while there is still room forimprovement. The author must have a solid language foundation in order to expressexpressions more accurately. Many mistakes have been found in the use of Englishtenses. When introducing the exhibits, the author sometimes confuses the presentperfect tense with the simple past tense, indicating that the author’s bilingual ability invocabulary, grammar, knowledge and experience needs to be improved.Only whenshe is proficient in these two different languages can she successfully carry outinterpreting activities. Therefore, the author should improve her interpreting skillsthrough hard practice and reflection.
