Chapter One Introduction
1.3 The Overall Structure of the Research
This paper involves five chapters.
Chapter one focuses on the background and introduces the purpose andsignificance as well as the outline of the paper. The second chapter is literature review,which mainly describes the development history and research status of related theory.Different definitions of cohesion and coherence theory by various scholars aresummarized and cohesive means are also introduced in this chapter. The third chapterelaborates the methodology of the research, and the research questions, instruments andparticipants are described in the chapter. The fourth chapter demonstrates the wholeprocess of the action research and the research results and analysis. The data collectedin the two questionnaire and the scores of three tests are analyzed and the researchfindings are discussed. The major findings and the limitation can be found in Chapterfive.
Chapter Three Methodology
3.1 Research Questions
This paper focused on the influence of the application of cohesion and coherencetheory on senior high school students' performance and awareness of discourse cohesionin “Seven Options for Five Blanks” reading. Below are the two questions of theresearch :
(1) How to improve students' awareness of discourse cohesion by applyingcohesion and coherence theory to “Seven Options for Five Blanks” English readingcomprehension teaching?
(2) How to improve students' performance in “Seven Options for Five Blanks”English reading by the application of cohesion and coherence theory?
Chapter Four Action Research Implementation
4.1 Problem Identification
When students handle the traditional reading comprehension questions, theyunderstand the details, make inference and judgement or summarize the main ideaaccording to the original text. The answers can be obtained in the original discourse.Compared with the traditional reading comprehension exercises, the passages of“SevenOptions for Five Blanks” reading comprehension are incomplete. The students can onlyinfer the content of blank based on the given information. “Seven Options for FiveBlanks”reading comprehension examines the students’ understanding on the articlestructure, content and logic relationships within the context, that is, the ability ofapplying cohesion and coherence theory into the problem solving. Students failed tofigure out the slight difference between the sentences through translating and removethe interference sentences. What’s worse, a mistake in one blank may lead to anothermistake or more, so the students reflected that they didn't know how to deal with thiskind of problem. Therefore, how to improve students’ performance of doing “SevenOptions for Five Blanks” reading becomes the priority of the researcher.
4.2 Plan Making
The action research consisted of two rounds.
The first round was from the first week to the eighth week. In the first class of thefirst week, the author briefly introduced the research action of cohesion and coherencetheory would be conducted at the class, and calls on the students to actively participateand take it seriously. At the same time, the questionnaires were given out to the students.After that, the questionnaire data was collected and analyzed so as to understand thestudents' attitude and current situation of solving ”Seven Options for FiveBlanks”reading and their comments on teaching. The author discovered that the studentsbarely knew the cohesion and coherence theory, to say nothing of applying the theory tosolving “Seven Options for Five Blanks” reading comprehension according to the resultof data analysis. Furthermore, their former teachers didn’t taught them a systematicstrategy of “Seven Options for Five Blanks”and cohesion and coherence theory.
The pretest was scheduled on the first class of the first week. Based on the resultsof the questionnaire and the test, the author developed an action research plan of thefirst round, which can be divided into three stages. Considering the intensive reviewtask of senior three students, the researcher took out one class in a week to carry out heraction research.
As can be seen in the Table 4.1, the first stage is about the introduction of thecohesion and coherence theory due to the students knowing little about the relevanttheory and strategies. Three theory classes are arranged to teach cohesion devices andthe context , whose aim is to teach students’ the general knowledge about cohesion andcoherence theory.
Chapter Five Conclusions
5.1 Major Findings of the Research
The purpose of this study is to explore how the action research based on cohesionand coherence theory improve the performance of “Seven Options for FiveBlanks”reading comprehension and students' awareness of discourse cohesion. Theparticipants of the research are 60 senior three students. In the process of the actionresearch, the author conducted interviews, questionnaires and tests on the students.After the action research, the author obtained and analyzed the relative data, and thefollowing are the conclusions:
(1) How to improve students’ awareness of discourse cohesion by applyingcohesion and coherence theory in “Seven Options for Five Blanks” English readingteaching?
The students' awareness of discourse cohesion was cultivated by a systematicintroduction of the relevant theories and analyze a passage from the perspective ofcohesion and coherence. It’s vital to help the students have a good command of thebasic knowledge of cohesion and coherence theory. The cultivation of the awareness ofdiscourse cohesion must be based on knowing various cohesive devices and thecoherence in meaning between sentences. So the teachers’ priority is to introduce andexplain the cohesion and coherence theory just as author did at the first round of theaction research. It would be better for the students to understand clearly if the teachersprovide some vivid examples.
(2) How to improve students' performance in “Seven Options for Five Blanks”English reading by the application of cohesion and coherence theory?
First of all, the teacher showed the students the propositional thought and tendencyas well as testing points of “Seven Options for Five Blanks” English reading. On the one hand, the students have a better knowledge of this type of reading, which obviouslyis of great help to solve such questions. On the other hand, the importance of cohesionand coherence theory can be emphasized again. Focusing on cohesive devices testedfrequently in the College Entrance Examination text papers can improve the speed andthe accuracy of “Seven Options for Five Blanks”reading exercises to a certain extent,which cultivates the students' sensitivity in doing such questions.
