Plan for the session
Activity 1

Look at one section of the paper I have circulated. identify what you find helpful, and find less helpful in the paper.  I will ask you to share your views with the other groups
I will outline the assignment brief – taking information from the TLP, assessment brief and notes for this weeks lecture
Identify any questions that have not been answered

 

Assignment
Using authoritative sources, models and frameworks which you consider appropriate to the study of organizations, critically analyze an organization of your choice and report on the analysis.

 

Practicalities-TLP
Word count: 3000 words (+/-10%)
Submission guidelines on the TLP (PG Office)
Write in your own words: cite all sources of information

 

Assessment Criteria - TLP
 Approaches to understanding and researching the nature of organization are considered
Choices amongst these approaches are made or the absence of choice is explained
The methods of data gathering are explained and justified
The data is critically analysed using relevant theories, models and frameworks
There is an explanation of the ‘fit’ (or the absence of such a fit is discussed) between the methods of data gathering, the analysis, the interpretation and the role of the writer of the assignment
The assignment should be clearly expressed, legible with accurate spelling and grammar, its structure appropriate, assertions supported and all material correctly referenced
Credit will be given for originality, creativity, fluency of argument, use of examples and illustrations

 

Learning outcomes -TLP
Understand and synthesize a diverse range of theories, approaches and perspectives relating to organisation
Critically evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of some of the theoretical approaches to your understanding of organisation
Critically analyse organisations utilising theoretical perspectives and demonstrating an appropriate level of reflexivity (rigorous exploration of their beliefs and their behaviours as individuals who critically analyse situations and theory)
Relate this critical analysis to their own practice/organisation and identify its relevance to future research studies they may undertake

 

Assignment brief
Analyse an organization of your choice. 
Part-time students -your own organization
 Full-time students - identify an organization that you have knowledge of, or that you have worked in. 
Whilst it is permissible to use case studies, case studies from text books do not provide you with enough indepth organisational analysis for you to do a comprehensive assignment. 
If this is all you can do, however, then you must check with your tutor about the appropriateness of the case study BEFORE you start to do any work on it.

 

Assignment brief
If your organization is a large one, you can narrow your focus to one department. 
Select one, two, or even three of the topics we cover in the module – do not attempt to include all topics covered in the module
Choose topics that are of interest to you, or are relevant issues within your organization. 
Remember that certain topics do go together very well, eg. structure and culture, power and culture, gender and  power, ethics and gender, technology and structure.  I know that it is difficult to confine yourself to one or two topics – as you read and study about one topic, then naturally others come in – that’s the nature of organization theory, but you need to remain focused.

Integrate your paradigmatic perspective.
Apply your paradigmatic perspective to the whole of the assignment – be consistent
Read Burrell and Morgan, but you can work with another approach (i.e. Hatch, Jackson and Carter, Meyerson and Martin)
Emphasis is upon analyse: use theories, concepts, opinions etc that are appropriate for your approach – aiming for synthesis of theory and practice.  Underpin your observations and argument at all times with the relevant theory

 

Different paradigms and consistency
Radical humanist -you cannot say that management theories on how to manage culture, control people are necessary, relevant and effective.  You are anti-management – you have to see organisations as modes of domination, preventing people from reaching their full potential etc.
Interpretivists are exploring symbol and meaning – trying to understand what is happening and being experienced so that you can ‘interpret behaviour’.
Functionalists you fundamentally believe in the structure of organisations and their necessity, seeking solutions to problems. 

 

Radical structuralists, you don’t really like organisations at all other than as showing further evidence of the dominant discourse of capitalism!
